History of Port Laredo

Timeline Line Timeline Line
1755

The Beginning

Laredo’s history as a trade hub dates back to 1755, when Captain Tomás Sánchez founded the settlement as a vital stop along trade routes between Mexico and the U.S.. Positioned along the Rio Grande, it naturally became a center for commerce, agriculture, and livestock trading.

19th & Early 20th Century

Growth of Rail and Road Trade

With the arrival of the railroad in the 1880s, Laredo’s importance as a trade gateway surged. The Laredo International Railway Bridge connected Mexico to the U.S., boosting cross-border commerce. By the early 20th century, highway expansions reinforced its role in regional and international trade.

Late 20th Century

The Rise of International Trade & NAFTA

As U.S.-Mexico trade expanded, Laredo’s infrastructure adapted to meet growing demand. The introduction of NAFTA in 1994 fueled exponential growth, making Port Laredo the largest trade hub in the U.S. With billions in goods flowing through, Laredo became a key link in global supply chains.

2000

The World Trade Bridge

To accommodate rising trade volumes, major infrastructure projects like the World Trade Bridge (2000) were developed, streamlining commercial traffic and reducing congestion. Advanced customs processing and dedicated trade lanes improved efficiency, reinforcing Laredo’s status as a high-volume trade center.

2010

Leading in Trade & Innovation

With ongoing technological advancements, logistics hubs, and security enhancements, Port Laredo surpassed 450+ seaports, landports, and airports to become the #1 port in North America. Investments in automated processing, traffic optimization, and digital tracking have positioned Laredo as a leader in global trade efficiency.
