The Beginning
Laredo’s history as a trade hub dates back to 1755, when Captain Tomás Sánchez founded the settlement as a vital stop along trade routes between Mexico and the U.S.. Positioned along the Rio Grande, it naturally became a center for commerce, agriculture, and livestock trading.
Growth of Rail and Road Trade
With the arrival of the railroad in the 1880s, Laredo’s importance as a trade gateway surged. The Laredo International Railway Bridge connected Mexico to the U.S., boosting cross-border commerce. By the early 20th century, highway expansions reinforced its role in regional and international trade.
